Cyberport Creative Micro Fund awards five start-ups with funding

A press conference announcing the companies who have been awarded grants from the Cyberport Creative Micro Fund (CCMF) Pilot Scheme was held on January 11, drawing together members of the media, the digital creative community and Cyberport executives.

Launched in September 2009, CCMF encourages local start-up companies to develop creative ventures by injecting first-step seed funding into their projects with the aim of bringing them a step closer to commercial realisation.

Selected from 70 applications, the first batch of five promising start-up enterprises, focusing on digital creative innovation, were each awarded HK$100,000 to help commercialise their creative ideas in respective areas.  The five chosen companies are Aldiko Limited, Alkheme Limited, DSP4YOU Limited, Music Powerhouse Limited and Stock Master Investment Limited.  Their ventures are in mobile ebooks reader, mobile KTV, intelligent investment platform, 3D online marketplace and green SmartPad.  Project details are shown in the table below.

"This initial funding from CCMF is just a start," noted Nicholas Yang, CEO of Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited.  "We believe that the CCMF model will demonstrate the viability and success of a new trend of private-sector driven financial support to the development of creative business in Hong Kong."

Given the success of this pilot scheme, Cyberport plans to increase its funds in the upcoming year in order to give more individuals and companies the opportunity to succeed.

Aside from CCMF, the Cyberport IncuTrain Programme also constitutes a crucial resource for the development of the industry.

Meanwhile, in a pre-incubation seminar that was held after the press conference, Cecilia Poon, Marketing Executive & Community Manager of Frenzoo Limited, shared her experience and success with the participants.  Frenzoo is an alumnus of the Cyberport IncuTrain Programme and winner of the Cyberport IncuTrain Excellence Award in 2008.

Frenzoo, which began its venture with seed investment from Ambient Sound Investments, recently established a strategic partnership with the renowned Anshe Chung Studio Limited to launch the world's first open 3D virtual world on the web.

Current incubatee Emagist Entertainment Limited also imparted its experiences with the participants.

Hong Kong has, in recent years, stepped up its support of creative ventures in digital entertainment, digital content and digital lifestyle as the sector takes on an increasingly important role.

The Cyberport IncuTrain Programme offers assistance in the form of business support including marketing, networking and legal advice as well as rent-free office space at Cyberport and access to its state-of-the-art facilities.  Cyberport will continue to play an active role in this area to foster the development of Hong Kong's creative and digital entertainment industry.

Firstly, there's an amazing lucky draw full of innovative and unbelievable prizes that symbolise the hopes and wishes that come with every New Year.  Once-in-a-lifetime gifts include the grand prize of a cruise trip on Oasis of the Seas for two.  The runner-up prizes include a barbecue party for 20 at Le Meridien Cyberport, a gourmet dinner for eight at the GP Dynastie Banquet Hall, a romantic helicopter travel experience plus one night's stay at a five-star hotel in Macau, and much much more!  A spending of just HK$50 at The Arcade, Cyberport, will entitle you the chance to win these dream prizes!

The decorative theme will meanwhile encapsulate the spirit of the festivities with a wishing tree and a wishing well, designed by local artist Jaffa Lam, emphasising the fulfilment of wishes in the New Year.  Visitors can buy a wishing pad at a mere HK$20 to throw onto the tree and make their own personal wish.  All the pads are handmade by the TWHGs Jockey Club Rehabilitation Complex with the entire proceeds going towards the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals.

For couples looking to take memorable photographs of the day, there is no better venue than the large spin wheel connected to a tandem bicycle that is certain to guarantee the optimum photo moment.

There will also be a parade of entertaining performances throughout the holiday season including a not-to-be-missed shadow play and puppet show featuring Michael Jackson-the-puppet, specially choreographed by puppet master Wong Fai.  Show dates are on February 13-16 and 20-21 at 2:00pm and 4:00pm.  A half-hour workshop will follow the show for audiences who want to learn more about shadow puppet and ordinary puppet making.  This begins at 3pm and 5pm, respectively.

No Chinese New Year celebration would of course be complete without the lion dance.  Cyberport's eye dotting ceremony, to take place on February 22 at 1:30pm, will kick off the lion dance tradition.

The lions will then perform age-old favourites like "Picking the Greens" and dance on pile sets at The Arcade, Cyberport, meeting tenants and shoppers along the way.

Hong Kong Wireless Development Centre collaborates on Guangzhou mission

Roundtable meeting with Comicfans Culture Communications
With China's entertainment and media industry flourishing at an exponential rate, charting a 25% annual compound growth rate at the end of 2009, the Mainland is becoming an increasingly important industry player.  In fact, it is expected to surpass Japan as Asia's leading entertainment media powerhouse in the next 18 months, according to research by PricewaterhouseCoopers.

To tap these opportunities, the Hong Kong Wireless Development Centre, in collaboration with the Cyberport IncuTrain Centre, Guangdong Anime Industry Centre and Guangzhou Conghua Anime Park Development Limited, co-organised the Hong Kong Digital Entertainment & Mobile Content Mission to Guangzhou on January 22.  The trip aimed to explore China's fast developing digital entertainment sector through networking events and company visits.

The group toured Comicfans Culture Communications, one of China's leading animation and management technology specialists.  The company produces some of the country's best-known cartoons, comics and youth literature including magazines and books.  The meeting with Comicfans was especially pertinent for the group given the company's focus on creative digital innovation.

The delegation also met with other potential business partners and end users at a networking roundtable meeting at the Guangzhou Yingbin Guan Hotel.  Industry players shared their perspectives on the sector's development in Hong Kong and China while the Guangdong government gave insights into its plans for the industry as well as its preferential policies and support measures.

Hong Kong companies and organisations also exchanged views on the current state of the digital entertainment industry, and held informative discussions with major Mainland Chinese digital entertainment companies including Guangdong Creative Power Entertaining.

Cyberport's new initiative furthers commitment to environmental sustainability

Cyberport recently launched a cooking oil recycling programme as part of its long term commitment to environmental sustainability.

Many of Cyberport's food and beverage tenants including Beautiful Shanghai Restaurant, Dragon Palace, Splendid Kitchens, Hang Heung's Kitchen, The Tricolour, and restaurants in Le Meridien Cyberport are participating in the programme aimed at collecting and converting cooking oil waste into biodiesel.  Kitchen waste oil is collected from these participants biweekly.  Biodiesel is a renewable resource that can be used in most engines with less air pollutants.

An in-house bio food waste decomposer with the capacity to convert 1,000 litres of waste oil is planned to be set up to collect kitchen waste from the restaurant outlets.  The waste will then be decomposed and refined into fertiliser.  These processes reduce waste disposal, transport fuel related consumption and also pollution.

The combination of biodiesel and kitchen residue recycle can reduce the emissions level of toxic and greenhouse gases in vehicles, and help alleviate the city's air pollution problem.  The use of biodiesel and kitchen residue recycle will also lower Hong Kong's carbon footprint and production of wastes given the city's dependence on imported diesel.

As a further step, Cyberport is also in talks with a hydraulic platform contractor to identify a way of using biodiesel in Cyberport.  This is in line with the Hong Kong Government's green initiatives as policymakers have considered the use of biodiesel in recent years given that emission levels from motor vehicles is a significant contributor to the city's worsening air pollution problem.
