Jolla launches its first smartphone |
Cyberport startup tenant Jolla has launched a brand new smartphone with a new
operating system and a sleek exterior that is set to pose stiff competition for
the likes of Apple and Samsung.
The phone will run on Sailfish OS, a Linux based operating system developed by
the Finnish company. The 4.5 inch HD screen phone's most unique aspect is
its split design which allows the user to simultaneously change the case and
settings including security levels. Each case can have unique embedded
software, for example enabling users to alternate one for work and one for
personal use.
"We believe we are now at a tipping point of change. Many in the industry
believe this year will be a new one for new operating systems," said Pasi Rusila,
Assistant Business Development Manager of Jolla.
"We are delighted with the launch of Jolla. The smartphone industry is
developing at a rapid pace. I am sure Jolla will contribute in a new and
unique way," said Mark Clift, COO of Cyberport.
The smartphone also features effortless, fast use by true multitasking and
gestures, and includes Android applications compliance besides its own Sailfish
applications. It is now available for pre-booking and is expected to ship
in selected markets by the end of 2013.
