Hong Kong to send players for FIFAe Nations Cup 2021 in Denmark

⋯⋯⋯⋯

Hong Kong now have a chance to compete at the highest level in esports at the FIFAe Nations Cup 2021™! Cyberport is teaming up with the Hong Kong Football Association (HKFA) and the Esports Association Hong Kong to select Hong Kong’s best players to form a five-player squad representing Hong Kong in the inaugural tournament in Denmark, where they will compete in the Nations Cup finals, rub shoulders with the world’s best gamers and vie for more than US$500,000 in prize money.

The three organisations will jointly organise the HKFA eFootball Open, backed by sponsor BOC Life, to pick the five players for the world event. “Esports has been on the rise for years with consistently expanding popularity but this is the first time the Hong Kong Football Association will send esports team to an official event under the international governing body. We are happy to have the opportunity to permeate football culture and sportsmanship in the cyber world,” said Eric Fok, vice-chairman of HKFA and the chairman of HKFA’s esports committee.

At the launch ceremony, Peter Yan, Cyberport’s CEO, reiterated Cyberport’s commitment towards Hong Kong’s esports and digital entertainment development. He noted that the industry has remained robust despite the pandemic; and traditional sports are increasingly embracing esportification and enjoying growing viewership. With such prospects, Yan pledged that Cyberport will continue to join forces with industry partners to promote industry growth and seize opportunities in this new normal.

Registration for the Hong Kong team has been completed successfully earlier in March and a total of close to 300 participants will be competing at four qualifier rounds held on 13, 14, 20, 21 March 2021 in the “FIFA21 Ultimate Team Mode” (FUT 21) on either PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. The four winners of each platform will proceed to the Qualifier Finals to be held at Cyberport on 3 April and the exciting tournament will be livestreamed at Cyberport Esports YouTube channel.
