Northern Metropolis
Northern Metropolis Ushers in New Era for Tech
The Northern Metropolis marks a new chapter in Hong Kong’s I&T development. Offering a strategic location adjacent to Shenzhen and seamless integration with the Greater Bay Area (GBA), this 30,000-hectare development will enable closer collaboration and stronger synergy with mainland partners. This initiative is set to catalyse cross-border innovation and unleash tremendous potential for Hong Kong’s, the GBA’s, and the country’s development.
Cyberport is fully committed to supporting the Northern Metropolis. Through strategic partnerships and dedicated projects, we are actively creating new pathways for growth and technological advancement.
Smart-Space PropTech and MTR Partnership Show Great Potential
Driving the development of a green and smart Northern Metropolis, Cyberport partnered with the Hong Kong Housing Society (HKHS) to develop an 8,000-square-foot Smart-Space PropTech. Making its debut in July 2023, this co-working facility is dedicated to propelling PropTech innovation and applications. Start-ups receive entrepreneurial guidance, funding support, and access to HKHS properties for proof-of-concept trials.
Smart-Space PropTech houses start-ups specialising in smart building, property management, smart homes, construction technology, GreenTech, and further innovative solutions.
Cyberport has additionally reached an agreement with the MTR Corporation to invest in start-ups developing technologies to enhance railway services, estate management, and smart retail. These technologies will be applied to support the development of the Northern Metropolis.
Cyberport has partnered with the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Union for Promoting Science and Technology to establish the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hub (Hong Kong) at Smart-Space PropTech. This hub will serve as an incubation centre, fostering youth innovation and entrepreneurship while strengthening technological collaboration between Shenzhen and Hong Kong to promote GBA integration.
Lau Fau Shan Transforms into Digital Tech Hub
According to the Northern Metropolis Action Agenda published in 2023, a Digital Technology Hub will be the main industry positioning for Lau Fau Shan, where iconic innovation and technology (“I&T”) facilities of a scale comparable to the Cyberport will be set up to adopt digital technology to promote the integration of new and traditional economies, and support young people to start businesses, thereby becoming a start-up base for Hong Kong. Cyberport is working with the Government to study the development of an I&T ecosystem focusing on the application of digital technology and assist start-ups seizing new opportunities brought about by the Greater Bay Area (“GBA”). The digital tech hub is also dedicated to fostering modern services and logistics clusters in the Hung Shui Kiu/Ha Tsuen New Development Area. The proposed I&T facilities will accelerate the digital transformation of traditional industries, leverage Qianhai’s modern service industry advantages, and foster stronger synergy between Shenzhen and Hong Kong service sectors.
